Oli Webb kicked off PURE ETCR Race DK with victory in Round 1 on the streets of Copenhagen for Romeo Ferraris-M1RA, while there was also a Battle wins for Jean-Karl Vernay.
The Briton, who started on the inside line, led into the first corner and was never headed as CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport’s Dániel Nagy and Hyundai Motorsport N’s John Filippi followed him home.
“The start was always going to be tricky,” said Webb. “The inside is always a preferable starting position, but the practice getaways were all in the middle and the racing line is on the outside.
“There was a little bit of water on a drain cover in front of me too, so I wasn’t looking forward to it. But I got it, pulled away and the other guys had a battle, so I was able to just control it.”
Webb’s team-mate Luca Filippi made the best start in Battle 2 to take the lead from the outside line, but in doing so he clipped the starting gate and ripped a rear-wheel fairing off his Giulia ETCR by Romeo Ferraris.
A red flag was the result as track staff removed the debris from the circuit and attended to the damaged Starting Gate. Upon restarting, Filippi slotted into third, behind Jean-Karl Vernay – who led from the middle lane – and Mattias Ekström.
Vernay was victorious from Ekström – the first time the Swede has been beaten in Round 1 all season – with Filippi third.
Vernay will face Webb in Round 2 with a faster race lap giving him first choice of starting position. Ekstrom will Battle against team-mate Nagy with both Filippis together.
Heavy rain following the session, combined with a lack of running in wet conditions on PURE ETCR’s Goodyear tyre, has led to a decision to insert an additional 25-minute practice session in the slot originally allocated to Pool B Round 1.
All drivers are permitted to take part using free-practice tyres. Pool B Round 1 is now scheduled to begin at 1410 local time.
