Jean-Karl Vernay believes he’s in a ‘strong’ position following PURE ETCR’s inaugural event, Race IT at Vallelunga.
The Frenchman finished second overall in Italy in his Hyundai Motorsport N Veloster ETCR to lie just five points behind series leader Mikel Azcona, of Zengo Motorsport X CUPRA.
He believes there’s more performance to come at next weekend’s Race SP at MotorLand Aragón as he aims to knock Azcona off the top of the points table and the Goodyear #FollowTheLeader standings.
“We can be happy with our points position,” said Vernay. “Second and first in my Saturday battles and then winning my SuperFinal is a good start.
“For sure the CUPRAs were very fast [at Vallelunga] and we have to work more to come back to them, but I scored good points for the championship and the team did a good job.”
Vernay was especially happy to leave his ‘bogey’ circuit in such a position of strength.
“I always like to come here, but I’ve never been fast here,” he added. “There are two corners where I’ve never been fast, so I’m happy to leave Vallelunga with so many points.”
Race SP at MotorLand Aragón runs from July 9-11.
