Vernay: Important to finish season with a win

Jean-Karl Vernay says that ending the PURE ETCR season with a victory was ‘extremely important’ for the whole Hyundai Motorsport N squad.

The Frenchman was crowned King of the Weekend on home soil at Race FR thanks to a dominant victory in DHL SuperFinal B and in turn won the TAG Heuer Most Valuable Driver award for the event.

Better still for the South Korean manufacturer was that Vernay’s team-mate Augusto Farfus completed a one-two result, helping to land the winning manufacturers’ prize for the event and alleviating the frustration of missing out on the PURE ETCR crown by just four points.

“The car was awesome,” Vernay said. “The Battle for the SuperFinal is always something and I’m really proud of the work we’ve done with all four drivers.

“Augusto did the Best Lap Trophy and we both won our SuperFinals. If you look at the points table, we were not far from winning it. It was very important to go out on a high and we did that.”

Vernay said that after witnessing series leader Mattias Ekström spinning wildly across the track at the start of DHL SuperFinal B, he believed he had a chance of taking the title.

“I tried to push really hard over the first two laps because I knew If I could put him two laps down he wouldn’t be able to score points [due to being short of the required 75 per cent distance to do so].

“But he was out of the pits too quickly for that, so I just tried to keep focused so I didn’t make any mistakes.”
