Mattias Ekström claimed a tight PURE ETCR Round 2 Battle victory at Race SP at MotorLand Aragón to ensure he will end the day on top of Pool B and make himself one of the favourites to become King of the Weekend.
The Swede put his CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport e-Racer into the lead by Turn 1 and fended off intense pressure from Hyundai Motorsport N driver John Filippi for the duration.
His victory means he – like Pool A-leading team-mate Mikel Azcona is unbeaten so far in Spain.
There was an even more entertaining fight between Ekström’s team-mate Dániel Nagy and Romeo Ferraris – M1RA’s Oli Webb in Battle 3.
After a tense first half of the race, a thrilling final two laps, which included several lead changes, was eventually settled in Webb’s favour as Nagy out-braked himself and ran wide at the hairpin with two corners remaining while trying to wrest the top spot.
Romeo Ferraris – M1RA scooped two of the three Round 2 Battles in Pool B as Luca Filippi completed a solo run; rival Jean-Karl Vernay not even leaving the pits due to a suspected driveshaft failure on his Veloster N ETCR.
“It’s not a good day,” the Frenchman said. “But I still have the Time Trial later to recover and get a good starting position for tomorrow.”
The day ends with the Round 3 Time Trials, which will decide the starting positions for tomorrow’s DHL SuperFinals.
