Mattias Ekström’s dominant performance at PURE ETCR Race SP last weekend gave him the honour of wearing the Goodyear #FollowTheLeader jacket for the first time.
The Swede won his Battles in Round 1, Round 2 and DHL SuperFinal B to take the maximum possible score of 77 points at MotorLand Aragón and avenge the disappointment of an equally strong performance last time out that just feel short of victory.
This, combined with CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport team-mate Mikel Azcona being eliminated from DHL SuperFinal A while leading and on-course for a second consecutive perfect score, helped Ekström to move to the head of the standings.
“It’s very good. I’m super-pleased to have a decent, clean, weekend,” Ekström said. “But in Vallelunga we were also strong; but I had a very good lap in the Time Trial cancelled.
“This time I drove too slow in my Time Trial lap so I knew that starting from third would be tough. In the SuperFinal I wanted to take the chance to lead at the gate so I could control the race.
“That didn’t quite happen, but I had some fair racing with Jean-Karl [Vernay] and won. I think I’ll be battling him a lot more this year.”
Ekström heads the Drivers’ rankings by 22 points from Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay while team-mate Jordi Gené is third overall, 37 back. Azcona is now fifth.
CUPRA stretched their Manufacturers’ advantage to 41 points over Hyundai, narrowly defeating their rivals to ‘winning manufacturer’ honours by just four points in Spain.
The series continues with Race DK on the Bellahøj Park street track in Copenhagen on August 6-8.
