Daniel Nágy feels ‘honoured’ to have scored his maiden PURE ETCR Battle win in front of his home crowd at Race HU at the Hungaroring last weekend.
The Budapest native – driving for the locally-based CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport team – captured his first victory in Round 2 on Saturday; benefitting when on-the-road winner Jean-Karl Vernay was penalised for exceeding track limits.
Nágy said that this did not take anything away from the sense of pride he felt at becoming the 13th different Battle winner in 2021.
“It’s an honour to have this first Battle win in PURE ETCR at my home circuit,” he said.
“I wanted to have it on the track, but when I was fighting Jean-Karl, I saw him go off the circuit at Turn 4. The rules were clear that if you go out, it’s a three-second penalty, so the task was just to stay within three seconds and learn what I could.
The 23-year-old said that the experience of racing in front of his home fans was different to normal due to the lack of noise generated by his 500kW all-electric CUPRA e-Racer.
“It was very funny because electric racing cars don’t produce that much noise,” he added.
“When I go in the car, I can hear more than usual from the crowd and that gave me an extra boost. I remember my first time here racing internationally and I was super-nervous. I’m much calmer now on my fifth time.”
Nágy’s weekend results – which included a 20-point penalty for spinning Luca Filippi into the wall in DHL SuperFinal B, put him 10th in the Drivers’ Championship
