John Filippi stormed to his maiden PURE ETCR Battle win as the Pool B competitors began their Race SP campaigns with Round 1 on Friday afternoon at MotorLand Aragón.
There was also a victory for CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport’s Mattias Ekström, who repeated his opening-round success from Vallelunga, just as Mikel Azcona had done earlier.
The Hyundai Motorsport N driver was beaten off the line in Battle 2 by Romeo Ferraris – M1RA pair Oli Webb and Luca Filippi, dropping to third place.
But at the halfway point he gambled on using the majority of his Power-Up to move into the lead, and had just enough in reserve to keep his Veloster N ETCR in front while the Giulia ETCRs of namesake Luca Filippi and Webb gave chase.
Battle 1 was led by CUPRA’s Daniel Nagy initially as Hyundai’s Jean-Karl Vernay struggled to get off the line – the Frenchman later admitting ‘something was not right with the traction control’.
Nagy was eventually passed by team-mate Mattias Ekström and by Vernay; the Frenchman chasing the Swede and finishing just 0.1 seconds behind his rival.
Ekström moved ahead of Vernay into second place in the Drivers’ standings, meaning that CUPRA drivers now occupy the top two spots. He is 12 points behind Mikel Azcona.
The results also mean Ekström and John Filippi will face off in Round 2 on Saturday morning with 10 points on offer for each winner. Vernay will Battle Luca Filippi with Nagy taking on Webb.
