Augusto Farfus opened PURE ETCR Race HU with victory in a sensational Pool A Round 1 Battle against Philipp Eng and Jordi Gené.
The Hyundai Motorsport N driver passed Philipp Eng on the grass between Turns Three and Four at the Hungaroring after the pair had switched places several times over the previous lap-and-a-half to seal the win.
Farfus, the Romeo Ferraris-M1RA driver and CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport’s Jordi Gené had engaged in a three-way fight for the win right from the start.
Eng jumped ahead with a very late-braking move at Turn 1 early on; both he and Farfus narrowly avoiding being wiped out by Gené, who was only just made the corner himself.
Round 1 highlights
After some door-bashing between Farfus and Eng and creative use of their 40 seconds of Power-Up – which increased their 300kW power to 500kW, it was the Brazilian who prevailed with Gené third. Both Eng and Gené were later penalised three seconds each for exceeding track limits
Points leader Mattias Ekström, who is mathematically capable of winning the Drivers’ title this weekend, won Battle 2 despite starting from the outside position.
The Swede used Power-Up to overtake both Luigi Ferrara’s Giulia ETCR by Romeo Ferraris and John Filippi’s Veloster N ETCR on the run to Turn 1 for the first time and sprinted away to finish the Battle with an advantage of over three seconds.
Ferrara and Filippi were second and third; the former just managing to hold off his rival on the final lap despite a major lock-up and slide at Turn 1 on the final lap.
