Augusto Farfus will start DHL SuperFinal A from pole position after heading a Hyundai Motorsport N one-two in the Round 3 Time Trial at PURE ETCR Race IT at Vallelunga.
The Brazilian’s time of 1m26.612s was almost half a second faster than the similar Hyundai Veloster N ETCR of team-mate Tom Chilton, who was his nearest challenger.
“It feels great,” said Farfus. “We should be very pleased and we’ll now try to optimise the race result.
“The Time Trial is quite a challenge. You have to try to compromise because you can’t leave too much on the table, but you need to be committed too.
“I really like this challenge of going blind for a quick lap. These cars, at 500kW, are incredibly fast. It’s a big challenge to get the maximum.”
The Time Trial is a one-lap, all-or-nothing shoot-out from a standing start that sets the grid for the SuperFinal. Each driver is equipped with PURE ETCR’s maximum 500kW power for the entire round.
Behind the Hyundais, Zengo Motorsport X CUPRA’s Jordi Gené was third fastest with the Romeo Ferraris – M1RA Giulia ETCRs of Rodrigo Baptista and Stefano Coletti – whose laptime was disallowed for exceeding track limits – next up.
Current Pool A points leader Mikel Azcona, who won both of his Battles yesterday, was the first car on track, but was dealt a cruel blow to his hopes of becoming King of the Weekend when he suffered a left-rear puncture on his lap and spun.
He will start SuperFinal A from the back of the six-car grid as a result.
