Hyundai Motorsport N’s Augusto Farfus stormed to pole position for DHL SuperFinal A as he set the pace in the first of PURE ETCR Race FR’s Time Trials on Saturday.
The Brazilian was the fifth of six drivers to set his lap and did so in 1m26.026s; enough to beat Daniel Nagy’s CUPRA e-Racer by over half a second.
The Time Trial is the only part of the PURE ETCR weekend in which the drivers compete with 500kW peak power – equal to 670bhp – for the entirety of the round, and the difficulty of the challenge this presented at Pau-Arnos was evident.
With drivers working overtime in steering input and under braking, the single-lap shootout proved ultra-spectacular.
Title contender Mikel Azcona was first out and blew his chances at Turn 3 as he locked his brakes and slid wide; his brief trip through the gravel costing the CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport driver his shot at pole.
That handed the initiative to Romeo Ferraris-M1RA racers Oli Webb and Luca Filippi, until Farfus pumped in his pole lap.
Nagy, the last man on track, produced his best Time Trial lap of the year to go second with Webb completing the front row on the 3×2 grid.
Luca Filippi, Azcona and Hyundai’s John Filippi make up the second row with Azcona needing to finish third to stand any chance of prolonging his title hopes beyond tomorrow’s DHL SuperFinal A.
