Philipp Eng seized a commanding victory in DHL SuperFinal A at the Hungaroring to put himself in contention to become PURE ETCR King of the Weekend for a second straight event.
The Austrian beat polesitter Mattias Ekström into the first corner from the outside of the front row and held the top spot for virtually the duration of the five-lap Battle.
Both were briefly passed on the outside by Eng’s Romeo Ferraris-M1RA team-mate Luigi Ferrara into Turn 1 at the first time of asking, but clever use of their Power-Up at the corner exit meant Eng and Ekström were able to pull back ahead into the next corner.
Eng and Ekström ran and hid for the remainder, finishing just 0.4s apart, but more than 3s clear of the latter’s CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport team-mate Jordi Gené, who had started last.
Behind Gené came Ferrara and John Filippi’s Hyundai, but a three-second post-race penalty for Ferrara for exceeding track limits dropped him to fifth behind Filippi.
Hyundai Motorsport N’s Augusto Farfus did not start due to a technical issue that kept his Veloster N ETCR in the pits.
Mikel Azcona, who starts from pole in DHL SuperFinal B, is the only driver capable of stripping Eng of ‘King of the Weekend’ status, but the Spaniard will have to win to claim glory for himself and stop Eng becoming the series’ first back-to-back event winner.
