Rookie Philipp Eng sensationally became King of the Weekend for PURE ETCR Race DK with a dominant drive in DHL SuperFinal B on the streets of Copenhagen that led an emotional one-two finish overall for Romeo Ferraris-M1RA.
His lights-to-flag victory from pole position meant his total of 71 points for the weekend just overhauled team-mate Luca Filippi, who had won DHL SuperFinal A with a daring last-gasp move on Mattias Ekström.
Eng – the third different King of the Weekend in as many events – was quick to pay tribute to the Romeo Ferraris-M1RA team, who suffered a major loss last week with the passing of one of the key instigators of their Giulia ETCR project, Aldo Cerruti.
“It was a great weekend,” he said. “The car was extremely good and I’m so happy for the whole team, who have gone through a lot with the passing of Aldo recently.
“To have Luca in P2 as well for the weekend is amazing for all the Romeo Ferraris-M1RA team. It’s been a lot of fun.”
The Austrian was put under immense early pressure by Hyundai Motorsport N’s Tom Chilton, but an incident for the Briton with a lap to go put him out and promoted CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport’s Jordi Gené and Mikel Azcona to second and third on the road.
Eng’s team-mate Rodrigo Baptista was fourth with Hyundai’s Augusto Farfus – the Pool B leader overnight – slipped to the tail of the field at the start and could only manage fifth.
Ekström – third overall behind Eng and Filippi – leaves Denmark as the series leader, 24 points ahead of Vernay, with Gené and Mikel Azcona making it three CUPRA drivers in the top four.
