Mattias Ekström has described his PURE ETCR title success as the culmination of two years’ work for himself and CUPRA Racing.
The Swede was crowned the winner of the first all-electric, multi-brand touring car series after a dramatic season finale at Pau-Arnos E-Circuit yesterday and was quick to pay tribute to the Spanish manufacturer.
“It means a lot to me, and especially for CUPRA,” said Ekström shortly after wrapping up the title. “When I came here in 2019 the goal was to build a car, build a team and go and win PURE ETCR.
“That was our mission and now, in a couple of years, we’ve achieved it. It’s been a big job and a challenge that I’ve really enjoyed.”
CUPRA Racing teamed up with Zengo Motorsport for the 2021 season; the e-Racers driven by Ekström, Jordi Gene, Mikel Azcona and Dániel Nagy being based in the headquarters of Zoltan Zengo’s team and serviced and prepared by its Hungarian-based mechanics.
The re-christened CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport team were crowned Manufacturers’ Champions earlier on Sunday as Azcona’s third place in DHL SuperFinal A meant that neither Hyundai Motorsport N nor Romeo Ferraris-M1RA were capable of overhauling them.
“I’m proud of the entire team,” Ekström added. “They’ve been pushing every day and doing a great job. To be able to celebrate this championship win with them is really special.”
