Mattias Ekström stormed to pole position for DHL SuperFinal B at PURE ETCR Race IT by obliterating the rest of the field in Time Trial B at Vallelunga, but the Zengo Motorsport X CUPRA driver had to overcome early drama to do it.
The Swede, who leads Pool B after yesterday’s pair of Battle wins, was the due to be the first driver to set a marker in the one-lap, all-or nothing shoot-out, which determines the grid for the SuperFinal.
But after being called into the pits by Race Direction at the end of his out-lap, he then was re-positioned as the final car in the running order.
Under extreme pressure, Ekström set a searing pace in 1m26.296s to set the fastest lap of the day with the maximum 500kW power available to his CUPRA e-Racer; enough to out-pace Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay by over half a second.
“I did everything I could,” said Ekström. “The temperature outside is hot so the car got a bit loose for me – and I think for everyone else too.
“In the last sector I as a bit conservative, so I was happy to make it back to the pits with a decent time. It’s nice to be on pole, but nobody ever won a race just by starting it. It’s not over until the famous lady sings.”
Luca Filippi, who showed maximum commitment throughout his lap, was the fastest Romeo Ferraris – M1RA driver in third; Hyundai’s John Filippi splitting him from Giulia ETCR by Romeo Ferraris team-mate Oli Webb.
Ekström’s team-mate Dániel Nagy starts sixth in the second CUPRA.
