An ultra-consistent third-place finish in PURE ETCR Race DK consolidated Mattias Ekström’s positon at the head of the Drivers’ Standings and gave him the honour of donning the Goodyear #FollowTheLeader jacket for a second-straight event.
The CUPRA by Zengo Motorsport driver increased his series lead from 22 to 24 points over Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay – fourth in Denmark – thanks in no small part to a clever decision on the final lap of DHL SuperFinal A.
“I decided to be cautious on the last lap after I scratched the wall,” the Swede said. “But I was too cautious.”
His decision to ease his pace slightly, rather than risk a potential incident, led to Romeo Ferraris-M1RA rival Luca Filippi being able to squeeze by on the run from the final chicane to the finish line by just 0.118s.
While that ultimately cost Ekström King of the Weekend status, he was philosophical in defeat as he focused on the big picture.
“Yes it’s not a good feeling to lose a race like that, but you just have to live with it, learn from it an move on,” he added.
“It was better to make sure I got the points and finish second than to maybe take too big a risk. I’m leaving with an increased points lead and having set the fastest lap in the Time Trial, so that’s a big positive.”
Two PURE ETCR events remain with the next coming at the Hungaroring, Hungary, on August 21-22.
