Ekström goes back to his roots in Latvia ahead of PURE ETCR finale

PURE ETCR series leader Mattias Ekström will this weekend get a bit of extra practice in ahead of the title-decider at Pau-Arnos E-Circuit as he contests the Estonian round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship.

The Swede, who races for CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport in the world’s first all-electric touring car championship, will drive for ALL-INKL.COM Munnich Motorsport at the Bikernieki track, in a SEAT Ibiza – a model produced by CUPRA’s owner brand.

“I’m excited,” said Ekström, who has a long and glorious history in rallycross, having been World Champion in the discipline in 2016.

After taking his first PURE ETCR event victory at MotorLand Aragón during the summer, Ekström commented that the similarities in format between rallycross and PURE ETCR’s Battles had helped his transition between the disciplines.

“You have to be right at the maximum performance immediately,” he said after winning in Spain.

“There just isn’t the time in these short Battles to think about a long-term strategy. Everything has to be much more ‘now, now, now’ so you really have to take any chances that come to you, or create them yourself.”

Ekstrom is one of five drivers in with a chance of winning the inaugural PURE ETCR title before it evolves into the FIA eTouring Car World Cup in 2022.

The others are his team-mates Mikel Azcona and Jordi Gené, Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay and Romeo Ferraris-M1RA driver Rodrigo Baptista.

The season climaxes with Race FR at the Pau-Arnos E-Circuit in France.
