Ekström ends PURE ETCR season wearing blue

It was utterly predictable that, as PURE ETCR’s inaugural title winner, Mattias Ekström would automatically end the world’s first all-electric touring car season wearing the Goodyear #FollowTheLeader jacket at Pau-Arnos E-Circuit.

But what was less predictable was that CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport drivers would do so after every event in 2021.

It was Mikel Azcona who was first to don the blue-and-white jacket at Vallelunga with a stunning drive from the back of the grid in DHL SuperFinal A to claim victory and King of the Weekend status with Ekström third.

But the Swede bounced back next time out at MotorLand Aragón, winning each of his Battles to become King of Spain while Azcona ended his SuperFinal in the gravel and Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay lost points through missing Round 2.

Ekström’s series lead stood at 22 points by this stage and it steadily increased to 34 over the next two events as Romeo Ferraris-M1RA’s Philipp Eng and Azcona were victorious.

The dramatic events of the Pau-Arnos season finale so very nearly turned the destiny of the title – and the last Goodyear #FollowTheLeader jacket – but thanks to quick work in the pits by his team following the incident between Ekström and Eng, it was the CUPRA e-Racer driver who emerged triumphant.
