Ekström eliminates Baptista from title battle with Round 1 win

Four drivers will fight for the inaugural all-electric, multi-brand touring car title across the remainder of the PURE ETCR Race FR weekend following a dominant victory for Mattias Ekström in his opening Pool B Battle at Pau-Arnos E-Circuit.

The CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport driver was drawn on the advantageous inside line in the ‘Group of Death’ against chief title rival Jean-Karl Vernay and Philipp Eng – the top points-scorer over the past two events.

But the Swede came out on top of his Battle, rubbing bodywork with Vernay’s Hyundai Veloster N ETCR at the entry to Turn 1 and running away with things afterwards.

His victory eliminated Rodrigo Baptista – fifth in the points – from the final reckoning, meaning it is now a four-way fight heading into Saturday’s Round 2 action.

Vernay was the runner-up, moving back into second place in the standings – a point ahead of Mikel Azcona – but dropping to now 34 points behind Ekström. He only managed this after a tooth-and-nail battle for the spot with Eng that went down to the final corner.

Battle 2 was more CUPRA domination with Jordi Gené just maintaining his title hopes with a victory ahead of Rodrigo Baptista’s Giulia ETCR and Tom Chilton’s Hyundai.
