Drivers’ Choice hands Ekström pole in Danish Draw

PURE ETCR Series leader Mattias Ekström played his hand to perfection to snatch the ideal starting spot during The Draw for Race DK on the streets of Copenhagen.

The last of six drivers chosen for Pool A, the Swede was randomly awarded the ‘Driver’s Choice’ when he looked set to be put on the outside line for the start of Battle 2.

This gave the CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport ace the power to select any starting position he wanted; the Race SP winner naturally choosing the effective ‘pole position’ that the inside line provides.

In doing so, he moved Luca Filippi’s Giulia ETCR by Romeo Ferraris to the outside line of a loaded Battle that also contains Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay – second in the points.

But while Driver’s Choice denied Romeo Ferraris-M1RA one pole position, it handed them one in Pool B as Rodrigo Baptista used an identical move to put himself in the most advantageous starting position for Battle 1, shifting Hyundai’s Augusto Farfus into the middle.

British drivers took full advantage of a favourable draw in the remaining Battles. Romeo Ferraris-M1RA’s Oli Webb will start Pool A Battle 1 from pole while Hyundai’s Tom Chilton has the position for Pool A Battle 2 – alongside newcomer Philipp Eng.

Hyundai were awarded the Golden Ticket, giving them the option to swap two of its drivers between Battles. They opted not to.
