Azcona sparks major challenge to lead Pool B at halfway stage

Mikel Azcona ended Saturday as the leader of PURE ETCR Race HU Pool B after an electrifying unbeaten run through the day for CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport at the Hungaroring.

To the delight of the local fans, who were enthusiastically cheering on the Budapest-based Zengo element of the team, the Spaniard followed fellow Round 1 winner Rodrigo Baptista for the first half-lap.

He then cleverly used his Power-up exiting Turn 1 and was able to get past before the next corner; the CUPRA man then staying ahead.

Following Augusto Farfus’ penalty in Pool A, Azcona is now the only driver capable of finishing the weekend with a maximum score of 77 points. He has 27 with 50 available for a DHL SuperFinal victory tomorrow.

Battle 2 went the way of Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay on the track, but the Frenchman was penalised three seconds for exceeding track limits, handing CUPRA’s Daniel Nagy his first Battle win at his home circuit.

Luca Filippi won the final battle for Romeo Ferraris-M1RA ahead of Hyundai’s Tom Chilton.
