Mikel Azcona is the early leader of PURE ETCR Race IT following wins in each of the first two rounds of competition at Autodromo Vallelunga.
The Zengo Motorsport X CUPRA driver beat stiff competition from Stefano Coletti and Tom Chilton to win his opening Battle and then went head-to-head with fellow Round 1 winner Augusto Farfus later on, beating the Brazilian by 1.7 seconds.
Azcona’s perfect record means he heads the Pool A standings on 27 points – five clear of Stefano Coletti, who added to his runner-up spot in Round 1 by beating Romeo Ferraris – M1RA team-mate Rodrigo Baptista to win their intra-team Battle in Round 2.

“It was thrilling,” said Head of CUPRA Racing, Xavi Serra. “The laptimes between Mikel and Augusto were exactly the same. Mikel was pushed very hard, but he did a great job.”
Friday night’s Draw had set the starting order for Round 1, in which three cars Battled against each other using 300kW constant power, but with 40 seconds of Power-up – a 200kW boost – available.
Farfus, who lies third in points currently, became the winner of PURE ETCR’s first-ever battle, the Hyundai Motorsport N driver inheriting a big lead when rivals Jordi Gené and Rodrigo Baptista collided at the Tornatino hairpin.
Baptista took his Romeo Ferraris – M1RA Giulia ETCR to second – despite sustaining splitter damage – with Gene third. Baptista was later penalised eight championship points for causing the incident.
An entertaining scrap between Gené and Chilton resulted in the Spaniard’s favour in Battle 3.
The morning Rounds consisted strictly of drivers in Pool A. The six competitors in Pool B will begin their weekend this afternoon with a maximum of 27 points again on offer.
