Mikel Azcona moved into second place in the PURE ETCR Drivers’ standings with a decisive victory as PURE ETCR Race FR kicked off with a scintillating pair of Pool A battles at the Pau-Arnos E-Circuit.
The CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport driver was slow off the line, but moved up the order when team-mate Dániel Nagy let the title contender past towards the end of the first lap.
The Spaniard then made a decisive move inside Hyundai Motorsport N’s John Filippi at the downhill first corner on the penultimate lap and drove off to a victory that moved him to just 20 points behind championship-leading team-mate Mattias Ekström (though with Ekström’s Round 1 Battle still to come).
Filippi led off the line and, after being passed by Nagy into the first corner, re-took the advantage into the downhill ‘corkscrew’ soon after.
Battle 2 was even more spectacular and was most notable for contact on the final lap between Luca Filippi and Augusto Farfus as they disputed the lead.
Farfus put his Hyundai Veloster N ETCR inside Filippi’s Romeo Ferraris-M1RA Giulia ETCR with two wheels on the grass at the sweeping Turn 7 and made contact with the side of the Italian’s car, resulting in the latter going off onto the grass.
Post-Battle, Race Direction determined that no investigation was necessary into the incident. Filippi finished third behind his team-mate Oli Webb.
