Advantage Ekström in title race as Swede wins again in Battle 2

Mattias Ekström took a major step towards the 2021 PURE ETCR title with another dominant performance in Pool B Round 2 against team-mate Jordi Gené.

The CUPRA X Zengo Motorsport driver was unchallenged as Gené played the dutiful team role by sitting behind and ensuring the Swede maximised his score.

In doing so, Gené also ruled himself out of the title fight, meaning only three drivers can now be crowned tomorrow’s DHL SuperFinals.

Ekström’s chief title rival Jean-Karl Vernay was victorious in his battle over Rodrigo Baptista, meaning the Frenchman matched the Swede’s score for the day.

This means Ekström only needs to finish fifth in tomorrow’s DHL SuperFinal B to be crowned as the first winner of an all-electric, multi-brand touring car series.

Vernay, who must realistically rely on Ekström not finishing tomorrow, took his Hyundai Veloster N ETCR to the Battle win against Baptista’s Romeo Ferraris-M1RA Giulia ETCR.

The final Battle of the round gave Baptista’s team-mate, Philipp Eng, the win over Tom Chilton’s Hyundai.
