Luca Filppi snatched an opportunistic victory in a breathtaking finish to DHL SuperFinal A on the streets of Copenhagen to put himself in prime contention to become King of the Weekend for PURE ETCR’s Race DK.
The Italian had gone wheel-to-wheel with polesitter Mattias Ekström’s CUPRA e-Racer through the first two corners of the race and only narrowly avoided being relegated to third by Hyundai Motorsport N driver Jean-Karl Vernay into the chicane for the first time.
But while Ekström looked to have both the DHL SuperFinal – and Pool – victory sewn up, Filippi was able to pounce after exiting the final corner.
He shoved his Romeo Ferraris-M1RA Giulia ETCR into a rapidly-tightening gap, making contact with both Ekström and the wall, but squeezing past to take the win by just 0.118 seconds.
His success brought Filippi onto 66 points for the event, meaning only Mikel Azcona, Augusto Farfus and team-mate Philipp Eng – who starts DHL SuperFinal B from pole position – can now defeat Filippi in the race to be King of the Weekend.
Ekström extended his series lead over Vernay – third – to 24 points and is guaranteed to leave Denmark ahead in the Goodyear #FollowTheLeader standings. Oli Webb (Romeo Ferraris-M1RA), Dániel Nagy (CUPRA) and John Filippi (Hyundai) completed the top six.
