Mikel Azcona made history by becoming PURE ETCR’s first ever King of the Weekend as Jean-Karl Vernay won DHL SuperFinal B to deny Mattias Ekström the glory in Race IT at Vallelunga.
Starting last after he was disqualified from his pole-position run in the Round 3 Time Trial, Ekström was the only driver on the grid with a chance of defeating Azcona as the pack pulled away underneath the Starting Gate.
Needing to win to tie his Zengo Motorsport X CUPRA team-mate on 77 points, and force victory on a tie-break, Ekström was in inspired form, charging up to second place by the half-distance lap.
Perfectly utilising is 40 seconds of Power-Up, which took his CUPRA e-Racer from 300kW to 500kW power, he set about reducing the two-second gap to Hyundai Motorsport N’s Jean-Karl Vernay, who had led from his inherited pole position.
He wound up just 0.781s behind at the chequered flag, which ensured the Frenchman finished the event second overall on 72 points with Ekström third on 69.
Behind the pair there was a lively four-car scrap for third that eventually went the way of Romeo Ferraris – M1RA driver Luca Filippi. Hyundai’s John Filippi, Guilia ETCR by Romeo Ferraris driver Oli Webb and CUPRA’s Dániel Nagy completed the order.
